Another gem to the sonic collection, sonic chaos is also known as sonic and the hedgehog chaos in Europe. The main story revolves around Dr Robotnic and his evil plans to capture the world. He creates nuclear missiles and lasers. In this version, egghead has stolen the red chaos emerald which has caused the other emeralds to lose balance. As a result, the island is sinking in the ocean and it is up to Sonic and his friends to save it.

In this version, Sonic comes equipped with a new and improved Strike dash attack with which he gains extraordinary speed. When released, he shoots like a ball hurting all the baddies that come in his way in this position. Another action move, called the super peel cut makes sonic move even faster than the strike dash. But while using this technique, he is still vulnerable to his enemies. Also, he becomes slightly heavy while using super peel cut so he slows down quickly. This means that the faster way to go uphill is the Strike dash. Another of the new techniques is the Sonic�s rocket boots which allows him to temporary zoom through the air and hence find large amount of rings. This is generally the focus of the special stages.

Sonic also has the job of finding all six chaos emeralds, which are located in the special stages. In order for sonic to enter a special stage, he must collect 100 rings in one act. Then successfully complete the special stage to get one chaos emerald, but if you lose the special stage, sonic reaches straight to the beginning of the last stage where sonic was earlier at, but this time without the emerald. Dr. Eggman himself holds the seventh emerald and you need to defeat him in order to obtain the last emerald.

Playing with Tails is definitely easier than sonic. Although he runs slower, he gets 5 lives and 3 continue in the beginning. But, while playing as tails, the player cannot obtain the chaos emeralds. It can perform the spin dash technique as the same way as sonic. But instead of rocket shoes which sonic obtains, tails gets a speed boost. Another difference is that tails can fly a little bit but sonic cannot.

The sonic chaos contains 2 features, one as already told is the rocket shoes, and the other one is the pogo spring item monitor. This item is the springs attached to Sonic's or tails shoes, and last for a limited time. This gives an unprecedented jump that allows the player to jump obstacles which are otherwise impossible to do so.
